Ranch Description
Generations of the Moorhead family have loved working the vineyards on this 144 acre farm in Moorheadville. (near Erie, PA) The land has never left the family until now. The main house was built in 1900 and we are the third generation to live in it. This land was originally purchased in 1811. The current generation is ready to move on so that new people can enjoy all it has to offer.
The farm is predominantly vinifera wine grapes with a few acres still in Concords. The wine grapes find their home in the local wineries and the Concords are contracted to a New York processor.
It's a beautiful farm with two creeks running through it, woodlands that can be timbered every 10 years or so and a number of dwellings. There are four houses that generate monthly income all located along Route 20, which is a four lane road that is the southern boundary of the farm. We are between the small towns of Harborcreek and North East. And we are but a couple hours from Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. A mere 40 minutes from the famed Chautauqua Institute.
It's a great place to raise a family with good schools, clean air and moderate temperatures. Never a chance of drought. The nearest large city is Erie, just 20 minutes away. And the shores of Lake Erie are only a mile away from the farm should you desire some beach or boating time.
There's some fun amenities to this farm: an almost regulation racquetball court over the former packing house, a full wine cellar in the basement, a sauna on the second floor and a greenhouse ready for use. Did I mention the large barn with its original massive beams? Plus plenty of woods to ride a 4 wheeler or go hunting.
Yes, it's been a little piece of paradise for the generations of Moorheads and we will be sad to leave it. However, we are anxious to meet the new owners and experience their happiness at such a wonderful opportunity. Yes, there is room to build a winery on the property. Or perhaps capitalize on agritourism and offer grape tours.
It's a very narrow belt along Lake Erie that is conducive to growing grapes and there is rarely any land for sale. Most of the farms have been in the families for generations.
On a beautiful day, riding on your tractor, it is difficult to imagine a better life.
